No team has won more home games in the Barclays Premier League this season than Manchester United, who are aiming to sign off on a high in Sunday’s clash with third-placed Arsenal.
The Reds have posted a tremendous record at Old Trafford this term, even allowing for the surprise defeat to West Brom last time out, and have 14 victories in total, having comfortably seen off Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City over the course of the campaign. Only champions Chelsea can match that.
One man has risen to the occasion time and time again at the famous old ground – Wayne Rooney. All bar one of the skipper’s 12 league goals have come on home turf, with the exception being his classy finish against this weekend’s opponents at the Emirates Stadium.
Rooney has scored 11 times in 15 home league games in 2014/15, including doubles against North-East duo Newcastle United and Sunderland. He also netted a header during the FA Cup loss to the Gunners in front of the East Stand and has amassed 125 goals in total at the venue for the Reds.
Furthermore, the captain clearly enjoys playing against Arsene Wenger’s men. His first senior goal for Everton was a long-ranger past David Seaman and his 12 strikes for the Reds against Arsenal means he has only scored more times against one other opponent – Aston Villa.
Hence, Rooney will be out to make life difficult for the North Londoners if he recovers from the dead leg that saw him substituted at half-time at Crystal Palace. As he is four goals clear of Robin van Persie in the battle to become the club’s leading scorer for the campaign, he is also on the verge of achieving that feat for a fifth time, unless the Dutchman conjures up something special against his former club and Hull City.
